icm final – fall 2007

they are watching.

this project makes use of the growing number of cameras that monitor the traffic infrastructure of nyc. although the presence of such a large network of surveillance cameras presents serious issues of privacy, there is beauty to be found in the rhythmic patterns resonating through new york city.

this project relies on two separate applets. the first of these two runs subtly in the background constantly refreshing the bank of images used by the visualization aspect of the project. the visualization aspect treats each individual feed as an independant obejct. each feed can be described by a matrix of parameters allowing numerous visual alterations to be made to each individual feed. these parameters include blob detection thresholds, image opacity, tint, colour modifications etc. the end result is a self-updating visualization of the flow of traffic pulsing through new york city.

currently the feed and effect selections are defined in the code, however the completed iteration of this project will run autonomously. Each selected feed and the effects applied to it will be decided by the algorithm allowing the visualization to run in real time 24 hours a day, reflecting the actual traffic patterns of nyc at any given moment.

the image set below represents a few select screen shots.

raphappy – karaoke

December 11th, 2007 admin

The primary challenge of this project was to improve raphappy.com’s Facebook presbrence while maintaining the site’s existing aesthetic and personality.

As demonstrated by the following video, midi has the ability to intrigue individuals due to its sheer simplicity while maintaining any familiarity one might have had with a given song. The following video was captured spontaneously as I tested the initial functionality of the karaoke application.

In order to accent the aesthetic created by the midi audio, a suitable container was necessary to contain the karaoke application. The current version of the facebook application (outside of the facebook environment for public viewing / testing purposes) can be found here.

Currently the application is in a developmental stage and will progress will be documented within this post. Significant emphasis will be placed on the post recording stages of the user experience. Specifically this will cover how the user affiliates themselves as well as their friends in the facebook environment.

remote kitchen

December 11th, 2007 admin

This design project aimed at creating a remote interface through which one could monitor and control various kitchen appliances.

The first iteration allowed a Macintosh OSX widget to dynamically monitor and change values stored remotely via php. To further illustrate the significance of this interface a mock oven was created in which a tri-color LED would react. The reaction of the LED allowed individuals to visualize changes in temperature with red and blue representing the extremes in the displayed color spectrum.

Despite the success of this iteration from a physical computing perspective, the design of the widget (the actual human interface) was underdeveloped and became the focus of the project. Through this pursuit, a superior interface was developped. The following images illustrate the transition towards our ideal manifestation of simplicity and functionality.

The following clip demonstrates the basic functionality of this interface.
